THE SEVEN
CATEGORIES OF ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGIES
AS PER ASTM F42 CLASSIFICATION
There are many different 3D
printing processes available or developed currently. They all have different
inherent specification either with respect to the working principle or
materials involved in the printing process. However, they share some common
traits based on which one can group them into different categories. American Society
of Testing Materials (ASTM) has created a dedicated committee towards the classification
of 3D printing or additive manufacturing processes. These classifications are
mentioned as below;
1. Vat Polymerization
2. Material Extrusion
3. Powder Bed Fusion
4. Material Jetting
5. Binder Jetting
6. Sheet Lamination
7. Directed Energy Deposition
